1. Introduction

Fumapem AP-30 is a non-reinforced Polybenzimidazole Copolymer membrane designed for use in High-Temperature Proton Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (HT-PEMFC). The polymer backbone for this HT-PEMFC membrane is categorized as a hydrocarbon polymer material.

2. Delivery

The membrane is the brown foil delivered in between paper layers. Carefully separate the membrane from the paper layers. The membrane is delivered in non-doped form.

The standard size of this membrane is 10*10cm & 20*30cm. Customized dimensions can be made upon request.

3. Precautions

Fumatech membranes are highly sensitive to differences in humidity and moisture content. Therefore the membranes can vary +/- 0.5cm from the original cut sizes. Also due to this sensitivity the manufacturer expects wrinkles to form, however soaking the membranes in deionized water will return the membranes to the full size planar state according to the manufacturer.

4. Features

- Applications: High-Temperature PEM Fuel Cell (HT-PEMFC)
- PBI Copolymer
- Thickness (dry): 25 - 35 micrometers (μm)

5. Welcome to cite our materials in your papers

Fumapem AP-30, a non-reinforced Polybenzimidazole Copolymer membrane, was obtained from SCI Materials Hub.

6. Handling

Keep membrane package closed / sealed when unused. Unpack membrane only for direct use and process it immediately after opening. Store, handle and process the membrane in a clean and dustfree area. Use only new and sharp knives or blades, when cutting the membrane.

Always wear protective gloves when handling the membrane. Handle with care, be sure not to puncture, crease or scratch the membrane, otherwise leaks will occur. All surfaces which may get into contact with the membrane during inspection, storage, pretreatment and mounting must be free of sharp edges or angles.

7. Doping with Phosphoric Acid

The doping shall be done by user. A general non-binding recommendation: Soak the membrane in 85 wt % H3PO4 at room temperature. Rise the temperature up to 130-140 °C and keep it for at least 6 hours. Membranes must be soaked completely in phosphoric acid. Please consider the membrane will expand during the doping process. Good performance of membrane is achieved when doping level reaches at least 280 % since the performance depends strongly on the doping level. Be sure no significant color change of the phosphoric acid is observed at the end of doping procedure. This can happen by over-doping, which has also negative impact on mechanical properties of membrane.

Remark: SCI Materials Hub bears no responsibility for applied doping procedure.

8. Long Term Storage

The membrane can be stored dry for an unlimited amount of time. However, the membrane has to be conditioned (washed and rinsed) prior to use.
