DiffuCarb™ E220c Platinum Black (High Surface Area) - Carbon Paper Water Electrolysis Electrode
Platinum black catalyst · A330R carbon paper · Nafion binder · AEM / ALK / PEM
The DiffuCarb™ E220c Platinum Black (High Surface Area) - Carbon Paper (Water Electrolysis Electrode) consists of platinum black catalyst and A330R carbon paper substrate, with Nafion used as the catalyst binder. It is suitable for various water electrolysis systems, including Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) electrolysis, Alkaline (ALK) electrolysis, and Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysis. For AEM and ALK electrolysis, users can also choose the DiffuCarb™ E204c Platinum Black (High Surface Area) - Carbon Paper Electrode (MGL370, AEMFC).
Additionally, we have developed the E220a, E220b, and other series, which differ in the catalyst used.
The carbon paper substrate uses our standard A330R carbon paper, but users can also choose from Toray (030/060/090/120/050/1.1), AvCarb (MGL190/280/370), CP-H450/H850, and other options based on their needs.
Here are the main characteristics and advantages of this electrode:
Platinum black catalyst · A330R carbon paper substrate · Nafion binder
1. Platinum Black Catalyst
High Surface Area: Platinum black catalyst in the form of high surface area nanoparticles provides more active sites to promote water electrolysis reactions. This high surface area allows for efficient electrolysis at lower voltages, producing hydrogen and oxygen.
High Catalytic Activity: Platinum black is known for its excellent catalytic activity, especially in the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) and Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) in water electrolysis, making it an ideal choice for water electrolysis electrodes.
2. A330R Carbon Paper Substrate
Excellent Conductivity: A330R carbon paper offers good electronic conductivity, ensuring that the current is effectively transmitted to the catalyst sites, reducing resistance losses, and improving electrolysis efficiency.
Structural Stability and Mechanical Strength: The carbon paper has good mechanical strength, maintaining its structural integrity during electrolysis, without easily deforming. This stability is crucial for long-term operation and large-scale hydrogen production.
Hydrophilic Surface: A330R carbon paper’s hydrophilic nature helps facilitate electrolyte penetration and timely bubble release, reducing bubble blockage effects and improving the uniformity and efficiency of the reaction.
3. Nafion Binder
Proton Conductivity: Nafion is an excellent proton exchange membrane material with high proton conductivity. As a binder, it helps ensure the uniform distribution and secure attachment of the platinum black catalyst, while enhancing the overall proton conductivity of the electrode and lowering internal resistance.
Chemical Stability: Nafion exhibits excellent chemical stability in acidic, alkaline, and oxidative environments, allowing the electrode to withstand corrosive environments generated during water electrolysis. This chemical stability ensures the electrode’s broad applicability in AEM, ALK, and PEM electrolysis systems.
4. Applicability
AEM electrolysis · ALK electrolysis · PEM electrolysis
AEM Electrolysis
In AEM systems, the platinum black catalyst combined with the Nafion binder ensures efficient electrocatalytic activity, while the A330R carbon paper provides excellent electron conduction and mechanical support.
ALK Electrolysis
For traditional alkaline electrolysis systems, the electrode design is also suitable. The high surface area platinum black catalyst enables efficient hydrogen production at relatively low current densities.
PEM Electrolysis
In PEM electrolysis, the application of Nafion as the proton exchange membrane material in conjunction with the catalyst improves the overall system efficiency, promoting proton exchange and reaction rates.
5. Advantages Summary
High efficiency · versatility · durability and stability
High Efficiency
The high surface area and catalytic activity of platinum black enable the electrode to achieve efficient water electrolysis at lower voltages.
Versatility
With its compatibility across AEM, ALK, and PEM water electrolysis technologies, the electrode has broad application potential and can meet the electrolysis needs of various systems and conditions.
Durability and Stability
The use of Nafion as the binder, combined with the structural stability of A330R carbon paper, ensures the electrode maintains stability and durability over extended operation periods, preventing performance degradation due to corrosion or aging.
