🔹 Accelerate® 20% Palladium on Vulcan XC-72R (Pd/C) Catalyst

1. Product Overview

Accelerate® 20% Pd/C catalyst is prepared by depositing ~20% palladium (Pd) nanoparticles onto a high-surface-area Vulcan XC-72R carbon support. The palladium nanoparticles are uniformly distributed with a typical size of 3–4 nm, ensuring high dispersion and excellent catalytic activity. This catalyst demonstrates superior performance in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and is also widely applied in electrochemical sensors and research fields.

Key Features:

  • Highly active palladium nanoparticles with uniform size (3–4 nm)

  • High surface area carbon support ensuring excellent dispersion

  • Superior electrode spray-coating performance for uniform catalyst layers

  • Low impurity levels, chloride content ≤ 500 ppm

3. Dispersion & Electrode Coating Process

Dispersion Procedure

  1. Add Pd/C catalyst into deionized water or a solvent containing ionic liquid.

  2. Stir thoroughly, followed by ultrasonication for 30–60 minutes to achieve uniform dispersion.

  3. For catalyst ink preparation, add an appropriate binder (e.g., Nafion® solution).

Electrode Spray-Coating Procedure

  1. Evenly spray the prepared catalyst ink onto carbon paper, carbon cloth, or directly onto the membrane electrode assembly (MEA).

  2. Adjust spray thickness according to desired loading.

  3. Dry the coated electrode at 80–120 °C for 30–60 minutes.

4. Application Scenarios

  • Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs): as cathode or anode catalyst

  • Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs): to enhance electrode performance and energy output

  • Electrochemical Sensors: as an active layer for detecting hydrogen or other oxidizable species

  • Hydrogen Recombination Catalysis: for hydrogen removal and gas purification processes

5. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What are the recommended storage conditions?
A1: Store in a dry, sealed, and cool environment. Avoid high humidity, high temperatures, and direct sunlight.

Q2: Can the catalyst be stored long-term in dispersion?
A2: Not recommended. Dispersed catalyst ink should be used within 24 hours to prevent precipitation and aggregation.

Q3: What are the advantages of Pd/C compared to Pt/C?
A3: Pd/C shows better CO tolerance in low-temperature PEMFCs and direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), while being more cost-effective.

Q4: How should I choose the catalyst loading?
A4: Typical loading is 0.1–0.5 mg Pd/cm², depending on fuel cell design and target current density.

Q5: How can adhesion of the sprayed catalyst layer be improved?
A5: Increase the binder content or perform hot-pressing treatment at 80–120 °C to enhance adhesion strength.
