ELECTROCHEMICAL REFERENCE ELECTRODES

Mercurous Sulfate Reference Electrode

A stable reference electrode series for acidic solutions, including Shanghai Chenhua, standard, extended-length, and double-salt-bridge configurations.

Product Overview

The mercurous sulfate reference electrode provides a stable and reproducible reference potential for electrochemical measurement systems, primarily in acidic solutions. Standard, extended-length, and double-salt-bridge configurations are available for different cell spaces and installation depths.

Reference SystemMercurous sulfate reference electrode
Suitable MediumAcidic solution systems
ConfigurationsStandard, extended-length, and double-salt-bridge types

Applications

  • Cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep, and potentiostatic testing in acidic electrolytes.
  • Electrochemical corrosion, metal-material, and coating-performance research.
  • Potential reference in batteries, electrochemical cells, and three-electrode systems.
  • Double-salt-bridge testing where increased electrode length or reduced sample contamination is required.

For samples that may react with the internal electrode solution or form precipitates, use with a salt bridge is recommended to reduce contamination and blockage risks.

Instructions for Use

  1. Before use, inspect the electrode body, ceramic liquid junction, and internal filling solution.
  2. After filling, place the electrode upright and gently tap it to allow internal bubbles to rise and disappear.
  3. Install the electrode on a fixture or electrode stand, keeping the liquid junction fully immersed in the sample.
  4. During measurement, keep the internal salt bridge solution level higher than the sample level to reduce reverse permeation.
  5. After testing, rinse the exterior with deionized water and prevent sample residues from remaining on the liquid junction.

Maintenance and Safety

  • Clean the electrode regularly and replace the salt bridge solution promptly to keep the liquid junction open.
  • For short-term storage, place the electrode in a solution matching the internal filling solution.
  • For long-term storage, cover the protective cap, store the electrode away from light, and prevent the liquid junction from drying out.
  • Do not allow the sample to flow back into the electrode and contaminate the filling solution.
  • Some internal substances may be toxic and salt bridge solutions may be corrosive. Follow laboratory safety procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What solutions are suitable for a mercurous sulfate reference electrode?

It is mainly suitable for acidic solutions. For strong acids, complex-ion systems, or precipitation-prone systems, add a salt bridge for isolation and protection.

Why must bubbles be removed before use?

Bubbles may interrupt the internal ion-conduction pathway and cause potential drift, slow response, or unstable measurements.

When should I choose the extended-length type?

Choose an extended-length model for deeper electrochemical cells, lower liquid levels, or installations where the auxiliary and working electrodes must be avoided.

What is the purpose of a double salt bridge?

A double salt bridge extends the reference pathway and reduces direct contact between the internal filling solution and the sample, helping to reduce contamination.

How should the electrode be stored?

Keep the liquid junction moist during short intervals between uses. For long-term storage, cover the protective cap, store the electrode away from light, and check for bubbles and liquid-junction condition before reuse.
