Laboratory Magnetic Stir Bars

Special-Shaped Magnetic Stir Bars

A range of PTFE-coated magnetic stir bars designed for specialized vessels, irregular vessel bottoms, and different stirring conditions. Cylindrical, triangular, irregular, spherical, oval, cross-shaped, and octagonal gear-shaped designs provide options for stable mixing and suitable magnetic coupling.

Product Overview

Special-shaped magnetic stir bars contain an encapsulated magnetic core within a PTFE coating. The rotating magnetic field of a magnetic stirrer drives the bar inside the vessel. Compared with a single cylindrical design, alternative profiles offer more choices for different vessel shapes, bottom contact conditions, and liquid flow patterns.

Chemical Resistance

The PTFE coating resists most acids, alkalis, salt solutions, and common organic solvents.

Multiple Shapes

Options include cylindrical, triangular, irregular, miniature, spherical, oval, cross-shaped, and octagonal gear-shaped designs.

Easy Cleaning

The low-adhesion surface supports rinsing, gentle wiping, and repeated use after experiments.

Flexible Vessel Matching

Choose the length, diameter, and shape according to the vessel bottom and liquid volume.

Size selection guideline: Stir bar length is generally no more than approximately half the effective diameter of the vessel bottom. Ensure that the bar can rotate freely at the minimum working liquid level.

Applications

Solution Preparation

Promote the dissolution of salts, buffer components, and powders.

Synthesis & Reactions

Maintain uniform mixing during temperature-controlled experiments, dropwise addition, and reflux.

Extraction & Dispersion

Multi-edged or asymmetric profiles can improve liquid–liquid contact and dispersion.

Sample Preparation

Support dilution, homogenization, leaching, and mixing before analysis.

How to Use

  1. Select a suitable shape and size based on the vessel bottom, liquid volume, and viscosity.
  2. Place the stir bar at the bottom of the vessel and center the vessel on the magnetic stirrer.
  3. Start at a low speed. Once stable magnetic coupling is established, increase the speed gradually.
  4. Stop stirring after the experiment. Remove the bar with a stir bar retriever or tweezers, then clean and dry it.

Precautions

  • Avoid high-speed operation without liquid to prevent decoupling, impacts against the vessel, or damage to the PTFE surface.
  • An oversized stir bar may bind, while an undersized bar may provide insufficient coupling. Match the bar to the vessel.
  • Do not scrape the coating with sharp tools. Replace the bar immediately if cracks, coating damage, or an exposed magnetic core are found.
  • Verify material compatibility before use with strong oxidizing media or under extreme temperature or pressure conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do special-shaped bars differ from standard cylindrical bars?

Special-shaped profiles change the contact pattern and liquid flow, providing options for unusual vessel bottoms, irregular containers, or systems requiring increased agitation. Cylindrical bars are generally suited to versatile, stable mixing.

How should I choose a shape?

First consider the vessel bottom and liquid volume, followed by viscosity and the desired stirring speed. Miniature or spherical bars suit small volumes. Cylindrical or oval bars suit standard vessels. Triangular or octagonal gear-shaped bars may be considered when increased agitation is needed.

What should I do if the stir bar jumps or decouples?

Reduce the speed and recenter the vessel on the stirrer. If operation remains unstable, choose a more suitable size, shape, or magnetic strength option.

How should I clean the stir bar after use?

Rinse with water or a cleaning agent compatible with the experimental medium. Wipe gently if needed, then dry thoroughly.

Can a stir bar with minor scratches on the PTFE coating still be used?

If the scratches do not expose the magnetic core and the bar is not used with sensitive samples, suitability may be assessed according to the experiment's requirements. Discontinue use if the coating is damaged or cracked, or if the magnetic core is exposed.
