High-Temperature Laboratory Stir Bars

High-Temperature Magnetic Stir Bars

Laboratory magnetic stir bars designed for heated stirring, temperature-controlled reactions, and high-temperature sample processing. High-temperature PTFE-coated and borosilicate glass-encased options provide choices for temperature suitability, chemical stability, cleanliness, and stable mixing.

Product Overview

High-temperature magnetic stir bars provide contactless magnetic mixing of solutions during heating or at elevated temperatures. The PTFE-coated type is suitable for many acid, alkali, salt, and organic solvent systems. The borosilicate glass-encased type is intended for applications that prioritize low leaching, visibly clean surfaces, and compatibility with glass-based systems.

Heated Stirring

Suitable for experiments involving hot plates, temperature-controlled reactions, and heated dissolution, subject to the selected product's operating limits.

Chemical Stability

PTFE options resist most common chemical media. Glass options suit a range of inorganic and aqueous systems.

Sample Cleanliness

Dense, easy-to-rinse surfaces support experiments with sample cleanliness requirements.

Stable Magnetic Coupling

Multiple sizes and shapes help match the stir bar to the vessel and magnetic stirrer.

Promote dissolution of salts, inorganic powders, and high-melting-point components under heated conditions.

Temperature-Controlled Reactions

Maintain continuous mixing during synthesis, reflux, dropwise addition, and constant-temperature reactions.

Glassware-Based Systems

Borosilicate glass options suit glass beakers, test tubes, and reaction bottles.

Clean Sample Processing

Support experiments sensitive to material leaching, particulate contamination, and sample visibility.

How to Use

  1. Choose a PTFE or borosilicate glass stir bar based on the vessel bottom, liquid volume, operating temperature, and medium properties.
  2. Inspect the stir bar for damage. Place it at the bottom of the vessel and center the vessel on the magnetic stirrer.
  3. Start at a low speed. Once stable magnetic coupling is established, increase the speed gradually. Monitor the liquid level and vessel condition during heating.
  4. At the end of the experiment, stop heating and reduce the stirring speed. Remove the stir bar only when the temperature and stirring speed are within a safe range.
  5. Clean with a compatible cleaning agent, rinse, and dry. Store separately by type, avoiding impacts and contact with sharp objects.

Precautions

  • Avoid high-speed operation without liquid to prevent decoupling, impacts against the vessel, or damage to the magnetic core encapsulation.
  • Protect PTFE coatings from sharp tools. Protect borosilicate glass stir bars from drops, impacts, and sudden heating or cooling.
  • Confirm material compatibility before using strong oxidizing media, hydrofluoric acid, extreme temperatures, or specialized solvents.
  • Stop use immediately and replace the stir bar if the PTFE coating is damaged, the glass is cracked, the magnetic core is exposed, or abnormal stirring occurs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose between PTFE and borosilicate glass?

Consider PTFE when broad chemical resistance and resistance to mechanical wear are priorities. Choose borosilicate glass when low leaching, visibly clean surfaces, and compatibility with glass-based systems are more important.

Can borosilicate glass stir bars be heated or cooled rapidly?

Rapid temperature changes are not recommended. Although borosilicate glass has good thermal stability, avoid sudden localized heating or cooling and direct contact with high-temperature heat sources to reduce the risk of thermal shock damage.

Are these stir bars suitable for every high-temperature experiment?

No. The actual operating temperature limit also depends on the magnetic core, encapsulation, medium, vessel, and magnetic stirrer. Follow the selected product specification and validation results for the intended experimental conditions.

What should I do if the stir bar jumps or decouples?

Reduce the speed and recenter the vessel on the stirrer. Check whether the bar size is suitable and whether the liquid viscosity is too high. If needed, select a more suitable shape or magnetic strength option.

How should I clean and store the stir bars?

Rinse with a cleaning agent compatible with the sample. Avoid metal brushes and sharp tools. Dry thoroughly and store separately. Provide additional impact protection for glass-encased stir bars.
