Q1. Can these membranes be reused?
Yes. If not damaged, membranes can be cleaned, reconditioned, and reused for multiple cycles.
Q2. Can I use scissors or a blade to cut membranes?
Yes, but use sharp blades only. Avoid dull scissors that can create stress points or delamination.
Q3. Are there front/back sides on these membranes?
No. All listed membranes are symmetric and non-oriented.
Q4. How should membranes be stored long-term?
Dry: In sealed packaging with desiccant, away from UV and moisture.
Wet: In 0.5–1.5% NaCl or Na₂SO₃ (1–3%) for biological stability.
Q5. Can NEXIONIC® membranes be used dry?
Yes, but they must be soaked in NaCl for 72 hrs before installation. Wrinkles disappear after hydration.
Q6. Can these membranes tolerate organic solvents?
No. They are only compatible with aqueous systems. Solvents like toluene, DMSO, or acetone will degrade them.
Q7. Can multivalent ions (Fe³⁺, Cu²⁺) pass through CEM/AEM?
Not easily. These ions have low mobility and low permeability through most IEMs.
Q8. Why is water transported through the membrane?
Electro-osmosis: Hydrated ions carry water as they move.
Osmosis: Water diffuses from dilute to concentrated compartments.
Q9. Why do membranes allow some co-ion leakage?
No membrane is 100% selective. Cross-contamination typically remains below 10% under optimized conditions.
